Saturday morning Striking & Clinching

A common misconception both inside and outside of the Jiu-Jitsu community is that Gracie Jiu-Jitsu is an entirely ground fighting sport where zero striking or stand up techniques are practiced. Although this is generally true within the sportive side of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu,  here at our academy  However is not the case. At our academy being able to Strike, Clinch, Takedown & Ground-fight is taught from the moment potential students step on the mat.

At the Eddie Kone Academy of Jiu-Jitsu we prepare our students  for real-life street self-defense situations where there are no rules and no time limits.

Feel free to come by and take your first FREE Lesson. Book a space here

We look forward to sharing the Academy with you.

Our Practice of the art goes and its philosophys back to the samurai as does our virtues. Above is our code of conduct our students Adhere too when practicing jiu-jitsu at the academy.

Most people consider Gracie Jiu-Jitsu to be a ground Grappling art which could not be further away from the truth. We practice the art in its completenes which includes – Takedown & Throwing Techniques – Striking – Clinching – Ground Grappling & weapon defence. We believe Jiu-Jitsu to be a complete Martial art preparing its students for confrontation on the street with self defence being our primary objective.

From the exert Below one can easily see how Jiu-jitsu was originally used as martial art on the battle field.

Below Extract from wikipedia – Koshiki no kata

Koshiki no Kata (古式の形 Koshiki-no-kata?, Form of the antique things) is a kata (a set of prearranged techniques) in Judo. It is also known as Kito-ryu no Kata. It consists of 21 techniques originally belonging to the Takenaka-ha [1] Kito School of jujutsu. Jigoro Kano revised the techniques and incorporated them into a kata in order to preserve the historical source of judo. The set of forms is antique and were intended for “Kumiuchi”, the grappling of armoured warriors in the feudal ages. As such, the kata is to be performed with both partners imagining that they are clad in armour.

Know Your Roots !

The Roots of Jiu-Jitsu begin with the warrior class, After the Feudal Period in japan ended Jiu-Jitsu was no longer needed on the battle field, A way to practice the art realistically was needed which is why the Late Jigaro Kano (2 Below Pics)

(1860-1938), An educated man and  Asian member of the International Olympic comitte and practitioner of jiu-jitsu developed his own version of jiu-jitsu in the late 1800s called Judo.

The Importance of Jiu-Jitsu Practiced as a self defence art.

Jiu-Jitsu is considered to be the most ancient and complete of the martial arts, When taught in its entirity is the most complete form of self Defence.

Not only is the practitioner of Jiu-Jitsu able to Grapple but also if needed he or she is able to call upon the skills of Striking, Takedowns , Throws , Weapon Defence, & Clinching .

In the Video below we can see how an argument in the street resorts to a man being attacked with a baseball bat.

The Assailant gets a quick suprise when the man he attacks uses a simple but effective Gracie Jiu-Jitsu weapon defence technique.

Apart from all the the training in Jiu-Jitsu it is very important that one should also practice mindset training and practice in a manor that would prepare him or her for a violent confrontation on the street.

The sportive side of jiu-jitsu is great and promotes healthy living, fitness , brings awareness to our art and of course jiu-jitsu for a sportive environment.

With that said those who sole practice just the sportive elements should definitely support there training with some stand up fighting I.E Boxing or Muay Thai and be mindful not to fall into the trap of Sport jiu-jitsu preparing them for a violent street confrontation, you wouldn’t want to become a black belt in BJJ and not be able to escape a simple head lock or bear hug.

Below is a Video from UFC 1 which shoes Royce gracie Using Gracie jiu-jitsu which includes strikes kicks and submissions.

Here at our Academy we prioritise and make sure every lesson focuses on Self Defence, After all Jiu-Jitsu is a samurai art and was  developed for the weaker to survive a violent attack from a stronger, larger adversary.

Don’t be mislead, make sure you know the limitations of your training.

We do not rise to the level of our expectations. We fall to the level of our training“.

The benefits of the Helio Gracie Jiu-Jitsu “Pisao Stomp Kick”

Let me take you back to the year 1993, Denver colorado when a young fighter by the name of Royce Gracie first entered the octagon,

This was the first time i noticed that a jiu-jitsu fighter also used strikes in combination with grappling.

This was the first time i saw the Pisao or stomp kick as its now more commonly known being used very effectivly, But why are fighters today using this kick more and more ?.

We have had the likes of UFC MW champion Anderson Silva use this kick with devastating style.

LHW Champion Jon Bones Jones Use the same kick with amazing results.

In our Academy this kick is taught as part of our fundamental self defense programme and forms part of Grand master Helio Gracie’s Self defense Curriculum.

The kick is snapped out towards the knee and thigh area so as the foot is a lot harder to grab,it is also a great way to keep a would be assailant away from you or for closing the distance when used correctly.

Below are some good examples of it being used.

Remember Gracie jiu jitsu is so much more then just a grappling art.
