The Importance of Jiu-Jitsu Practiced as a self defence art.

Jiu-Jitsu is considered to be the most ancient and complete of the martial arts, When taught in its entirity is the most complete form of self Defence.

Not only is the practitioner of Jiu-Jitsu able to Grapple but also if needed he or she is able to call upon the skills of Striking, Takedowns , Throws , Weapon Defence, & Clinching .

In the Video below we can see how an argument in the street resorts to a man being attacked with a baseball bat.

The Assailant gets a quick suprise when the man he attacks uses a simple but effective Gracie Jiu-Jitsu weapon defence technique.

Apart from all the the training in Jiu-Jitsu it is very important that one should also practice mindset training and practice in a manor that would prepare him or her for a violent confrontation on the street.

The sportive side of jiu-jitsu is great and promotes healthy living, fitness , brings awareness to our art and of course jiu-jitsu for a sportive environment.

With that said those who sole practice just the sportive elements should definitely support there training with some stand up fighting I.E Boxing or Muay Thai and be mindful not to fall into the trap of Sport jiu-jitsu preparing them for a violent street confrontation, you wouldn’t want to become a black belt in BJJ and not be able to escape a simple head lock or bear hug.

Below is a Video from UFC 1 which shoes Royce gracie Using Gracie jiu-jitsu which includes strikes kicks and submissions.

Here at our Academy we prioritise and make sure every lesson focuses on Self Defence, After all Jiu-Jitsu is a samurai art and was  developed for the weaker to survive a violent attack from a stronger, larger adversary.

Don’t be mislead, make sure you know the limitations of your training.

We do not rise to the level of our expectations. We fall to the level of our training“.
